MacWorld Goodies

The two obvious highlights are the new MacMini

& iPod schuffle

Check out Gizmodo for all the MacMini photos you could want.

With the price points for the MacMini and iPod shuffle being extremely competative, this will only increase Apple's share of the market.

Cornate has great listing of what Steve spoke about during his Macworld keynote.

The new iMac

My digital camera battery is lifeless, so this photo is via my cell phone.

This is what has kept me occupied over the last couple of days. I'm just getting used to it's size. The speed is soooo nice! I also purchased 1GB of additional memory, so that should never be an issue. Plus with the 160GB hard drive my stand alone 160GB hard drive, space will never be an issue either. I'm loving it.

I'm Finally Buying a New Computer

20inchimac.jpg

I'm finally getting a new computer. Wednesday night I will be purchasing a new 20-inch G5 iMac. I'll be purchasing IGB of memory as well. You don't know how excited I am. I've had my G3 iMac for about five years now, and it's begun to slow down. There have also many more instances of the twirling colored ball as of late. I do more and more things that require the number of programs to be run at one time, and the processor just can't handle it. I'm looking forward to having larger screen space as well. This will be especially nice when I have numerous programs open, and doing the old drag and drop.

I'll be spending the Friday after Thanksgiving, dedicated to setting up the new computer and transferring all the files and programs from the old computer to the new one. From what I've read in the discussion boards this shouldn't take long.

I'm so excited! I just can't hide it.

Apple's Mail Gets a Tiger Overhaul

tiger8a26mailsmall

Mmmm? I'm not sure how I feel about the new design. However, improvements sound great.

An apparent blending of two themes, the new look lifts interface elements from both of the company's existing themes and embeds them inside a sleek platinum gradient. According to sources, the first application to adhere to the new look will be the company's email client, Mail version 2.0.
Removed from the days of old is the retractable Mailbox drawer. Instead, the reworked email client sports a single window interface with mailboxes and folders that are docked on the left. The titlebar now flows into the toolbar and message counts are encapsulated inside circular interface elements. Overall, the theme presents a soothing, yet futurist feel.
Interface changes aside, Mail 2.0 will sport several additional enhancements such as smart mailboxes, an e-mail certificate viewer, and iCal integration. The application will also interface with an upcoming set of parental controls, which will allow Mac OS X 10.4 administrative account holders to censor information provided to sub-users on an application specific basis. The New iPod

The cover of the July 26th issue of Newsweek magazine appears to depict the next generation iPod, which is expected to debut in the near future.

The new version of the popular iPod apparently shares some features with the iPod Mini, including a scroll wheel design with built-in buttons. The iPod appears to feature a black and white display (with a slight blue-tinted backlight).

Official Macintosh Tiger News

Well, it was really a mixed bag. The improvements are great, but the new features are nothing to write home about. The release for Tiger is set for the first half of 2005. I must say, that the new cinema displays are pretty nice.

Additional new features in Tiger include: - Spotlight is Apple’s new lightning fast way to find any file, document or information created by any application on the Mac - Safari RSS, a new version of Apple’s acclaimed web browser uses the emerging RSS Internet standard to provide instant access to the most current information from leading sites - Dashboard offers users instant access to a new class of accessory applications called "Widgets" - iChat in Tiger supports the new industry standard H.264 video codec for dramatically better picture quality with no increase in bandwidth - Core Image and Core Video provide the foundation for new image and video processing applications, building on the success of Core Audio which is leading the next generation of innovative audio application development - QuickTime support for the next-generation MPEG-4 video codec H.264 delivers incredible scalability across the entire bandwidth spectrum, from 3G mobile media to High Definition broadcast and beyond - Tiger can natively run 64-bit processes for database, engineering and scientific applications to take advantage of the increased performance unleashed when accessing massive amounts of memory while still running side-by-side with existing 32-bit applications - .Mac Sync using a completely new Sync engine in Tiger ensures that .Mac subscribers can synchronize their contacts, bookmarks, email preferences and calendar across multiple machines - Automator, an innovative easy-to-use application that automates simple, complex, or repetitive tasks without requiring the user to write scripts - major advances to the open standards UNIX-based foundation including an updated state-of-the-art kernel with improved SMP scalability, 64-bit virtual memory, modernized network services and Xgrid, Apple's easy-to-use distributed computing software - improved Windows compatibility that uses powerful open standards-based networking technologies to make it even easier for Mac OS X users to access a Windows-based home directory and authenticate against Microsoft’s Active Directory - Xcode 2, the latest version of Apple’s powerful suite of developer tools, designed to make it even easier and faster to build innovative Mac OS X applications.

The Dashboard feature seems like a complete rip off of Konfabulator. It's Sherlock all over again (Apple basically copied Watson, and came up with Sherlock).

Tiger Screenshots

With only a few days until WWDC, some possible screenshots of Tiger have been released. [via MacRumors]

Some of the highlights from the Tiger Pre-Release:

A new version of Safari (v2.0) is bundled with the release and offers at least two new features. These include support for RSS news feeds as well as a new "Private Browsing" mode. Private Browsing allows users to browse without keeping a history of pages viewed.

Systems Preferences now have a search function.

It looks as if a Sleath Mode has been added to the firewall. "Ensures that any uninvited traffic receives no response -- not even an acknowledgement that your computer exists."

It also looks as if the biggest addition to Tiger is a feature called Dashboard, which seems to be something like Konfaulator.

I'm looking forward to Monday!

Update. More screenshots posted today!

Is a G5 iMac Coming? As it's getting closer to the Worldwide Developers Conference (June 28th), the rumors keep churning. The following was posted at AppleInsider.
Apple Computer, Inc. has told several resellers not to expect any further shipments of its iMac G4, and has delayed new Power Mac G5 orders from some resellers by several weeks, according to reports from multiple AppleInsider sources.
I hate to admit it, but I am working off of a 500 MHz Power PC G3 iMac. I would love me a G5 iMac. For my purposes, there is no real point of buying a Power Mac G5. Don't get me wrong, I would love one. I just can't dropping that much cash on a new computer (and monitor). I haven't had any major problems with this computer, but the processor is just getting to be too slow for some of the programs I use. I would also love to have the ability to use Garage Band and iMovie, which I don't with this computer. I'm looking forward to the revelations on June 28th.

Apple's Tiger OS

The rumors about Apple's latest version of it's operating system are starting to circulate. As one of the 500,000 people who is a .Mac subscriber I am thrilled that the updated operating system is going to have greater .Mac integration. One thing that is much needed, is faster iDisk performance. It's still too slow, which is one of the reasons that I really haven't used it as a storage location.

Mentioned possible improvements:

  • redesigned .Mac website
  • added .Mac features
  • .Mac integration with Tiger operating system
  • Faster iDisk performance
  • Much improved Finder window sidebar
  • Broadened functionality of the sidebar
  • new 3D effects to Tiger

In the vagueness of the descriptions, they all do sound like wonderful improvements. The rumor is that Tiger could cost more than previous versions of Apple's operating system. To justify a price increase, there better be some great improvements then. Apple also announced that future versions of it's operating systems won't be produced as often. This is probably a wise choice in a few ways. First off, customers are getting tired of plopping down $129 every year for a new operating system. Second, the extra time frame will also give the developers more time to make great stable improvements to the operating system. While it's fun to play with the new system each year,

I'm all for solid and major improvements to Apple's operating system. Maybe it will give them some more time to focus on their software development. iSync, iCal, and Safari still need to be improved.
